By Fall of 2018, Essex Market will prepare for its relocation as part of the Essex Crossing development. At this time of transition, In, Of, and Crossing Essex, curated by Anna Harsanyi, will present three artist projects by Sonia Louise Davis, Dillon de Give, and Hatuey Ramos-Fermín. From April 27-June 10 visitors will have opportunities to explore the public and private histories of the Market through the stories, perspectives, and lived experiences of the people who work and shop there every day.

Within the Market, a pro ject hub will be located at Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space, which will serve as a meeting place for special programs and events, and will feature installations by the artists. Cuchifritos is openTuesday-Sunday, 12-6 pm.

Learn more about the artists' projects.

How can I experience the project?

  • Through May 13, sign up to send a message from Essex Market, as part of Dillon de Give's project Go Between. To schedule an appointment, visit calendly.com/go-between or call 917-300-9521.

  • Attend an After-Hours Performance Workshop with Sonia Louise Davis on May 29, or join the artist for drop-in score-making on June 2.

  • Read vendors' reflections on Essex Market featured in Hatuey Ramos-Fermín's installation, then shop at participating vendors for a chance to take away a reusable shopping bag designed by the artist featuring their quotes.

  • Come to a discussion on May 14 with Hatuey Ramos-Fermín, Essex Market vendors, and city organizers, who will reflect on the importance of small businesses in shaping the city’s cultural vitality.

  • Join a roundtable discussion on June 10 with Sonia Louise Davis and other artists, as well as organizers, small business owners, and city residents. We will start with the question, what steps can artists take to support small businesses? Followed by a closing reception.

In, Of, and Crossing Essex is an independent project organized by Anna Harsanyi, in partnership with Artists Alliance Inc, Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space, and Essex Street Market. In, Of, and Crossing Essex is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. The public programs on May 14 and June 10 are organized with Artists Alliance Inc/ Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space and The People’s LES/FABnyc, and made possible, in part, through a Humanities New York Action Grant.
